OPIFEX:ALLIANCE Upcoming Group Show – March 29th
3 years ago
At Diana C. Munoz Gallery in the downtown arts district I talk with owner Diana C. Munoz and other members of the fittingly named art collective Alliance, Richard Koo, Flip Green Flowers, and Ralph Ordaz. We were encompassed by their latest works for their preeminent exhibition OPIFEX opening at Art Share L.A., Saturday, March 29th – April 18th 2014.
The large canvases were lit up with neon and fluorescent colors in ADHD scribbles. Images of Grecian sculptures juxtaposed with the appropriation of classical images such as Versace’s Medusa logo. It is a mixture of youth, madness and knowledge. The mixed media of which these images grow:oil paint, spray paint, highlighters mirror the diversity Alliance. For Opifex they will be debuting 5 collaborative works as well as work from each artist to exhibit their individual style.
This motley crew comes together brilliantly. The influence of street art is discernible in Ralph Ordaz’s work. For example he uses bubble letters, slang scribbled in spray paint, and other symbols derived from internet culture like hashtags. Ordaz is a whiz kid with a master’s in Fine Art from CSUN. Flip Green Flowers started out his career as an accomplished street artist. He is a self-taught artist and explores his relationship to the world around him. “[I feel like] a cartoon stuck in an abstract landscape,” he tells me. His is a quiet rebellion of anti-establishment art where Flip can “be in [his] own little world”. Richard Koo is an illustrator who also has an arts degree from CSUN. Painting for him is intuitive act where flaws are left exposed to reveal character. Diana has acute business acumen and a love for marketing. Her meticulous nature translates onto canvas as hyper realistic imagery of renaissance sculptures such as the ecstasy of St. Theresa.” The more complex the better”, She says.
Come see the blending of their styles March 29th for the opening of OPIFEX.
