After being diagnosed with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which loosely translates to “does not tolerate standing up”), Christina Nova Zych tackles the experience of body as enemy, wreaking havoc in mysterious ways while those around her still see a healthy normal person. The piece touches on elements of invisible illness and the valuing of female beauty above all else, exemplified in phrases said to her throughout her illness, such as: “at least you look pretty” and “but you don’t look sick.”

Vocalist-composer Cassandra Venaglia performs “Ebb,” an emotional soundscape that combines elements of visual and performance art with musical sensibilities. Words are taken from Edna St. Millay’s poem of the same name, using tide pools as a metaphor for dying love.
