Garrett Wingfield’s Octopod
The brainchild of saxophonist and composer Garrett Wingfield, The Octopod’s sound lies at the intersection of free jazz, contemporary classical music, and the big band/large jazz ensemble tradition. The band won the title of “Best Jazz Act” in the 2018 Denton Arts and Music Awards, and has its roots in the town where a thriving DIY art scene meets with a world-class music school. The ensemble was borne of a desire to break out of the box of big band tropes with a smaller group that can seamlessly switch between improvised and highly composed textures and execute both on an equally high level. Monoliths and Sepulchres, the band’s debut album, was released in January of 2018 and features “Berne Center,” the winner of a 2018 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Award. The Octopod aims to exist in the world of high art and low art simultaneously and draw from the best parts of each.
Isaura String Quartet
The Isaura String Quartet is a LA-based ensemble dedicated to the promotion of contemporary chamber music through live performance, workshops, and collaborative projects with composers and interdisciplinary artists. ISQ has worked with composers including David T. Little, Anne LeBaron, Gloria Coates, Ulrich Krieger, Kitty Brazelton, Sean Griffin, and Charles Gaines. Recent projects include the West Coast premiere of John Kennedy’s chamber cantata One Body at Boston Court, the two-part Machines & Strings concert series at REDCAT and CalArts, a workshop performance of Artaud in the Black Lodge with Beth Morrison Productions at REDCAT’s NOW Festival, and the world premiere of Gloria Coates’ chamber opera Stolen Identity. ISQ is featured on Refractions, Daniel Corral’s concert-length work for string quartet, processed music box, and guitar, released in 2017 on Populist Records. ISQ also has a forthcoming recording of Up-Tight II, Ulrich Krieger’s rock-inspired experimental string quartet.
Emily Call, violin

In addition to ISQ’s work in new music, they are the house band for Emo Nite LA under the alias String String Quartet and have performed with artists including the All-American Rejects and Demi Lovato. They have also performed and recorded for artists such as Baths, Emily Wells, Man Man, and Jherek Bischoff.
Petrichor
Petrichor is an experimental electroacoustic trio of oboist Breana Gilcher, guitarist Alkis Nicolaides, and bassist Miller Wrenn. Their performances explore the intersections of diverse musical logics and traditions, ranging from Baroque repertoire and free jazz to avant-garde chamber and noise musics, through unbridled improvisation and original compositions. Firmly positioned between the traditional collaborative models of chamber ensemble and jazz trio, Petrichor seeks to develop a new creative archetype for a 21st-century ensemble — moving fluidly through a musical world devoid of boundaries.
Equal Sound introduces listeners to new music by breaking down the traditional confines of musical genres. With our First Thursdays series partnership with Art Share LA, we bring together artists from diverse musical worlds to illuminate the threads between them.
