About
Exhibition: Neo Natives
Curator: Joshua Guinea
To recognize and honor the American tribes, their legacy, and to uplift their descendents, we’ve gathered a collection of indigenous, local artists. Historically, California and the surrounding states were a part of Mexico so Chicano art is also emphasized, but all of indigenous descent are to be cherished and regarded in this show taking place on Tongva land.

Neo Natives opens 6PM on Thursday, November 2nd at Angel City Brewery (216 S Alameda St, Los Angeles 90012) and will be on view through December 3rd.

Melina Saucedo

Melina Saucedo
I am a Mexican artist based in LA. I come from indigenous roots and portray that in my work. I have been on a reconnection journey and have been creating a series of paintings that represent the different stages of this journey as an immigrant and indigenous woman of color.

Hemege

Hemege
Mexican American artist based in Fullerton, with paintings ranging from psychedelic subjects to ordinary life. Mixing the strange and common to show a different perspective.

Arte de Maripistolera

Arte de Maripistolera
I go by the name Maripistolera, a journey that started many winters ago when I left Mexico. My fondest memory takes me back to Dia de Muertos celebrations in the cemetery, where I witnessed the striking contrast of beauty and darkness. Those memories stayed with me, inspiring my first drawings of Calaveras.
My art draws from my Mexican roots and the vibrant pop/goth culture, with influences ranging from the iconic Frida Kahlo to the renowned Gustavo Rimada. I proudly define my style as “Mexican Goth Surrealism,” where tradition meets the avant-garde.

Genesis Cuen

Genesis Cuen
Genesis Cuen, is a visual artist, illustrator, and dancer. Their art’s purpose is to create a conversation around their Mexican indigenous cultural and spiritual practices and beliefs, blending that with modern concepts and techniques. Genesis’ visual art, entices and invites the viewer to ask who or what the subject is and makes them view an ordinary common object as the sacred gift that it is. Cuen hopes to inspire others to research and discover their own roots, and to teach those that share similar cultural experiences something new about themselves.

Chief13

Chief13

Art.by.MarioSolorzano and SpellboundbyRed
Mario Solorzano, a self-taught mixed media artist from Pomona, California, creates emotionally evocative and surprising artwork. His pandemic-inspired journey quickly led to exhibitions in California galleries and installations at places like Stevens Steakhouse and Retro Taco Riverside. Known for his unique blacklight-reactive style and hidden surprises in his work, Mario has received awards at the Del Mar County Fair and painted murals for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. He not only dedicates his talent to art but also gives back to the community by curating the Klownski Foundation’s gallery wall and supporting various charitable causes. Mario’s love for portraits and a drive to create larger-than-life art make him an artist on the rise.

Ozkey Gonzalez

Ozkey Gonzalez
Chicano artist from East LA.

Victoria E. Orantes

Victoria E. Orantes
B. 1994 – Los Angeles. With the simple tools of a paint brush, canvas, oil paint, and a poetic heart, Victoria Ester Orantes creates figurative surrealist paintings that unify self-portraiture and natural scenery. An ongoing theme in her work is the acknowledgment of life’s darkness, yet she encourages the viewer to echo the way of plants and move toward the light. She carries out this theme with ripe emotion, elegant accompanying poetry, and saturated colors. Her work is a culmination of cerebral and soulful introspection, capturing the movement of a heart and mind that diligently turns pain into power.
