About
Jonathan Blum is the author of two books of fiction from Rescue Press: The Usual Uncertainties, named one of the 15 Best Short Story Collections of 2019 by Electric Literature, and Last Word, a novella, named of the best books of 2013 by Iowa Public Radio. He is a graduate of UCLA and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
When was the last time you read a story that you couldn’t put down? We all want to write such stories, but how do we do it? In this class, we will workshop short stories or novel excerpts of up to 20 pages, with the goal of helping each writer identify and build on the strengths of his/her work. In so doing, we will discuss what makes a piece of fiction irresistible. Class discussion will be frank, focused, and supportive. You will do exercises, designed to sharpen your fiction-writing skills and generate new work. By the end of the course, you will leave not only with fresh ideas for revision but with what could be the beginnings of new stories. Students of all experience levels are welcome, from beginners to more advanced writers.
$630 per student – jonathanblumwriter.com/classes
The workshop runs every Saturday from May 20 to June 24 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
