CALL FOR ART
Labor Of Love : A Group Show
SEPTEMBER 12 – OCTOBER 7, 2018
Lyft Driver? Barista? Accountant? Production assistant? Dog walker? Teacher? Activist? Historian? Documentarian? Performance artist? Or just someone who finds value in doing things the hard, old-school way?
Art Share LA is hosting a curated open call exhibition to showcase art as work, and artists as workers. This special Labor Day exhibition is aimed to highlight the artist as a whole person — to not only honor and share the hardworking, human side of their creative hustle, and how the pursuit of a “day job” affects their practice, but also to appreciate the activity of work as a noble subject for fine art, and to include and spotlight the use of materials, techniques, and processes that in themselves are labor-intensive, and assertively made. All forms of “Labors of Love.”
To submit, artists are to send 2-3 works to exhibit, and fill out an interview questionnaire. The questionnaire is formatted with a series of questions to learn about each artists’ “day job” (regular job or source of income outside of art), what drives them to keep creating art, and how this hustle inspires or influences their work. Submitted artwork is not required to be related to their “day job” but we do want to know more about that part of your life. The submitted artwork and questionnaire will be juried together, considering the artist’s story as a whole in conjunction with the quality of their artwork. Answers will be displayed alongside the exhibited works.
The exhibition gives viewers the full picture of the artist behind the work, what factors influence their art, and what it takes in order for an artist to have the ability to create — both inside and outside the studio.
Submission Guidelines:
• Submit 2-3 pieces of any medium that will be exhibited
• Must include full title, size, and medium in submission
• Must be less than ~ 36 x 48”
• No more than 3 submitted works will be considered
• Must fill out an interview questionnaire
• Each piece must be for sale and under $4,000
Deadline to Submit: Sunday, July 29th, 2018
Gallery Committee selects exhibiting artists based upon both their questionnaire and artwork: taking into factor the quality of artwork and the artist’s interview details. Artists will be notified whether or not they were selected on Monday, August 27th, 2018. Artwork drop off is Wednesday, September 5th, 2018.
