‘The Definition of Woke and Other Words That Matter,’ is a series launching on June 2nd, devoted to giving the stage to fearless artists whose work is urgent, topical and transformational.
What is ‘Eklektik Kenetik’ and why did you decide to form this series?
Eklektik Kenetic is a platform I’ve created to support and provide opportunity for local poets and writers in the Los Angeles literary community. I decided to form this because as an artist, I feel the need to be a good literary citizen. That means going to readings, buying books, and being at literary events.
What is the goal of your series?
The goal is to be another venue that gives writers access to audiences and the opportunity to share their work. In doing that, I’m actively a part of the community. Eklektik Kenetic was the logical next step to not only attend events, but also to create them.
How often do you host events like this? Is it always in Los Angeles or do you also have events out of state/country?
This event, “The Definition of Woke & Other Words that Matter” is my first literary event, my launching of this quarterly series. I also modeled some of Eklektik Kenetic on Conrad Romo’s Tongue and Groove L.A. Conrad’s been hosting literary variety shows and readings in L.A. for 15 years now.
How long have you been doing this for and what has the response been like?
I’m planning on quarterly readings. So, the next show should be in October and I’m looking at three to four month intervals hopefully. The next show will be called “The Redemption Project.” My events are L.A. based, but who knows? Maybe down the road, we can take it on the road! We’ll see. Hopefully people will show up and love it!
What was the process to select the featured guests?
The process is not set in stone. I approached artists, well known and not well known, whom I respect and whose talent is undeniable. On my website, eklektikkenetic.com, I’ve encouraged those who want to make change in the world, to apply. I’m looking for artists with heart and a voice. I’m open. So, the process will be a combination of me reaching out directly to artists I’ve heard about and then read and those who find me.
What is and why did you decide to partner with DSTL Arts?
I chose DSTL Arts because they’re developing new voices and emerging artists. I love that. I was mentored by PEN America and chosen to be an Emerging Voice Fellow in fiction. That happened in 2015. This fellowship changed my life. I started with 60 pages of a novel. I’m now about to finish that manuscript of over 400 pages and find an agent. I’ve grown as a writer and artist. I like that DSTL Arts is working in the community doing the same thing. It was an easy and obvious choice. I’m excited to contribute to DSTL Arts’ mission.
How can folks get more involved with Eklektik Kenetik?
I want those who participate, either on the stage or as the audience, to feel they were a part of a transformational moment where the power of language and music chipped away one stanza, metaphor, and chapter at systems that oppress, erase, and injure people’s bodies and spirits.
What do you want our subscribers to take away from the series?
I’d like your readers to know that money from the event goes to DSTL Arts. This is not about me making a profit or money. And finally, I’d like them to know I’m here and welcome them to join me in Eklektik Kenetic’s mission – making a difference in the world.
What’s next for Eklektik Kenetik?
To establish these quarterly readings as something the literary community anticipates and to bridge the artistic community with local activists. Basically, what’s next is continuing to bring great people together doing meaningful art that matters in an increasingly trouble nation that is rife with sexism, racism, and systemic oppression. I think art saves us and I want to promote that in whatever I do.
Is there anything else you want our readers to know?
People can get involved in lots of ways, including in recruiting and promoting as well as participating as an artist. Send me an e-mail at info@eklektikkenetic.com — Tell me your skills and let’s see how that can help further the goals of artists making a difference.
