About
Exhibition: HYPERFEM
Curator: Jackie Farkas
HYPERFEM is an exhibition that challenges the notion of a fixed “feminine aesthetic” in visual art. Through their unique practices in painting, drawing, fiber arts, and collage, the featured women artists directly or indirectly explore and process the complexities of femininity. Their artworks serve as a catalyst for deeper self-understanding, inviting viewers to question societal paradigms and embark on their own introspective journeys. By celebrating the transformative and transcendent qualities of femininity, HYPERFEM presents a tapestry of diverse perspectives, capturing the essence of womanhood through a range of emotions, experiences, and identities. This exhibition invites viewers to embrace the fluidity of femininity, redefining traditional boundaries and celebrating the empowering and resilient nature of artistic expression.

About the Artists

Jackie Farkas

Jackie Farkas
I am an abstract artist based in Los Angeles who specializes in oil and acrylic paintings. By utilizing the interplay of negative and positive space, my works delve into themes of absence and presence, memory, history, and feminism while showcasing a keen understanding of visual balance. Through expressionistic, vibrant hues and interconnected forms, I create captivating compositions that evoke a sense of harmony and intrigue. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Practice with Honors from UC Berkeley and a Master’s in Fine Art in Studio Art from Mills College, and my artistic journey has been shaped by rigorous academic training. My artwork has been showcased at prestigious institutions such as the de Young Museum, the Berkeley Art Center, and the Mills College Art Museum, attracting collectors both nationally and internationally.

Alexandra Bowman

Alexandra Bowman
Alexandra Bowman is an Oakland-based painter, illustrator and muralist whose figurative, colorful paintings mirror the diversity and vibrance of her community. She uses scale and linework to depict both real and imagined compositions of togetherness. Bowman’s practice focuses on ways to celebrate visibility and a myriad of racial, cultural and gender identities through visual storytelling.

Billy Frolov

Billy Frolov
Billy Frolov is an American painter whose work explores the interior landscape of domestic space and the objects that inhabit them. Serving as portals to memories and places no longer accessible, her paintings aim to fill voids longing for comfort. A student of craft and hobbyist tradition, Frolov builds her work with tenderness from sentimental processes and material that indicate the function and psychic nature of their subject. Though born in Buffalo New York, Frolov largely grew up in suburban Virginia outside of DC. She relocated to Los Angeles in 2013, graduated from ArtCenter College of Design in 2018, and her first solo show ran at Monte Vista Projects in Los Angeles in January 2020.

Anjelica Colliard

Anjelica Colliard
A. Colliard (b. 1990) is an artist based in Oakland, California. They hold a BFA from the University of California, Berkeley, with a focus in printmaking. A drawer at their core, they have honed their focus in recent years towards medium and large-scale mixed media drawings that feature fantastical botanicals with peaceful characters. They have also created large scale murals and worked with clients such as Airbnb, FrameStudio, Target and Google.

Cait Ball

Cait Ball
Cait Ball makes stuff for the wall. The table too. She is a third-generation Jewish Californian artist, currently teaching art at an LAUSD high school. Process driven, sometimes conceptual, her work begins with questions.

Bella Emmerich

Bella Emmerich
Bella is a textile artist and garment maker living and working in Los Angeles. In her work she explores the ecosystem of the home, from the utilitarian realities of household chores and to the beauty that exists in the everyday and beyond. She aspires to create art that celebrates the power and resilience of women, questions our collective history, and honors the natural world.

Molly Champlin

Molly Champlin
Molly Champlin is an artist and educator based in the San Gabriel Valley. She combines digital and analog methods in painting, exploring symbolic and luminous color, virtual landscapes, and digital materiality. Her work has been featured in group shows in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Japan. She has been the recipient of the Kleefeld Scholarship, Nell O. Fog Endowed Scholarship, and the Cal Alumni Association Leadership Award. She has a BA in English from UC Berkeley and an MFA in Drawing and Painting from CSU Long Beach.
