Art in Eduaction
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan released the following statement today regarding results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Arts 2008 assessment of Music and Visual Arts at Grade 8.
These results are important for several reasons. First, they remind us
that the arts are a core academic subject and part of a complete
education for all students. The arts are also important to American
students gaining the 21st century skills they will need to succeed in
higher education and the global marketplace - skills that increasingly
demand creativity, perseverance, and problem solving combined with
performing well as part of a team.
The results also remind us that learning in the arts can and should be
rigorous and based on high standards, and that it can be evaluated
objectively, using well-designed measures.
This Arts Report Card should challenge all of us to make K-12 arts
programs more available to America's children and youth. Such programs
not only engage students' creativity and academic commitment today, but
they uniquely equip them for future success and fulfillment. We can and
should do better for America's students.
The NAEP Arts is available online.

BRIDGING THE DANCE GAP
Art Share Los Angeles & FUSION Performing Dance Academy Collaborate For 3 Master Classes
LA-based non-profit, Art Share Los Angeles, has been serving underserved youth for over 10 years through an array of multi-disciplinary art programs. As Art Share is constantly looking for artistic opportunities for youth to experience cultured mediums, Program Manger, Ricardo Perez & Program Assistant, Danyol Jaye have partnered with Executive Director and Founder of FUSION Performing Dance Academy and professional dance company, FUSION Dance Theater. Albertossy Espinoza is offering students 3 master classes in 3 different genres of dance: Lyrical Jazz, Hip-Hop Fusion & Modern. As the organization grows, it becomes more and more important to expose our students to different cultures through dance.
An actor, dancer and choreographer born in Ecuador and raised in Chicago, Albertossy began his dance career as a Theater Dance major at Northern Illinois University. His training includes ballet, modern, jazz, flamenco, hip-hop and folk. After three semesters at NIU, he was scouted by Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theater and offered a company scholarship. Albertossy soon became an apprentice and started touring with the company, nationally and internationally. He also toured nationally and internationally with Soul & Duende Spanish American Dance Theater, Walt Disney Productions, Regina Klenjoski Dance Company and FUSION Dance Theater. His other credits include teaching abroad, guest choreographing for various dance companies, films and music videos. Volunteerism once again helps build a stronger community in an Artistic and Fashionable manner!
On Saturday, April 25th Art Share Los Angeles opened its doors to a very special volunteer by the name of Tabitha. Tabitha’s talent, one from many of course, is to create wire wrap jewelry and her interest was to teach youth and their families in a one day jewelry making workshop hosted at Art Share. With Mother’s day around the corner, students saw it as a perfect opportunity to create a very special self-made gift while other students geared towards expanding their accessories wardrobe. The workshop also brought together students and families from both our BLAST and FACT programs. The month of April was also a day of celebration since 6 of our students celebrated their birthday on the day of the workshop with food, music, cake and of course jewelry. It was definitely a day of community togetherness Art Share style. A special “thank you” goes to Tabitha for sharing her amazing talent with our youth and also a very special “thank you” to Sandy, another dedicated Art Share Volunteer for coordinating and fusing her contacts to lend a hand to youth in our community.
Attn Volunteers! We need you! Art Share is looking for several key volunteers who can donate 5-10 hours per week.
Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering. Check CONTRIBUTE & VOLUNTEER pages for details on jobs, volunteering and internships.
