Art in Eduaction

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan released the following statement today regarding results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Arts 2008 assessment of Music and Visual Arts at Grade 8.

These results are important for several reasons. First, they remind us that the arts are a core academic subject and part of a complete education for all students. The arts are also important to American students gaining the 21st century skills they will need to succeed in higher education and the global marketplace - skills that increasingly demand creativity, perseverance, and problem solving combined with performing well as part of a team.

The results also remind us that learning in the arts can and should be rigorous and based on high standards, and that it can be evaluated objectively, using well-designed measures.

This Arts Report Card should challenge all of us to make K-12 arts programs more available to America's children and youth. Such programs not only engage students' creativity and academic commitment today, but they uniquely equip them for future success and fulfillment. We can and should do better for America's students.

The NAEP Arts is available online.

Lesley Gilb Taplin Memorial Scholarship Fund

In memory of Lesley Gilb Taplin, Art Share has established the Lesley Gilb Taplin Memorial Scholarship Fund. The goal of the fund is to annually assist two deserving high school seniors in their first year of college and to promote cultural art and community advocacy. The scholarship will be open to all Art Share Los Angeles seniors who will be entering any Community College or University and has volunteered a minimum of 50 hours within downtown. Applicants will be asked to complete an application, prepare an essay on community building and provide a reference from a teacher. Art Share will create a 3-person community scholarship committee to review applications. Lesley was a founder of the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council (DLANC) and one of the early supporters of Art Share Los Angeles. An avid supporter of art, culture and community, Art Share plans to keep her memory and her efforts alive and well within the hearts of our youth and Downtown Los Angeles.

From the CEO, Mark E. Walker Life Evolving
I would like our young people to know that you can be a nice person, love what you do and be compensated well for it. These are the principals incorporated into Life Evolving. It represents a lifestyle, one that does not allow for other people to dictate what we are supposed to be or set limitations or boundaries. One in which no matter who you are you can still be conscious of the spiritual aspects of life, recognizing the flow of the Universe and knowing that we are all connected.

Life Evolving believes in conscious products for conscious living. Our “Life” wear represents the existence of our mission, a symbol of the enjoyment of life. Become the “Designer” of your own life. Let us change the energy and vibrations around us by removing the negativity in our world. Not only removing the negativity in our world. Not only are your thoughts and words powerful, but the clothes and colors that you wear release vibrations in the Universe. “Life” garments transmit positive expression of enlightenment through sacred geometric symbols and affirmations, bringing us closer to collectively changing the consciousness of the world. Wear them with the intention of strengthening your essential nature and your connection with the Universe. Use them as tools for creating your life the way you want it to be.
